1. How do you know if you have forgotten your tampon?

Can it really happen that you forget to remove a tampon? Yes.

And that's actually not that rare. When researching this topic, we even found that some women leave their forgotten tampon in their body for weeks and months. It's clear that this can't be good. But is it dangerous? And how do you even notice that a tampon is still wandering around in your vagina?

The crux of the matter is that if a tampon is in correctly, we don't even feel it. So it's no wonder that these little hygiene aids are often forgotten. In an emergency, the first thing to do is to stay calm .
Many women don't notice any consequences or symptoms and the tampon slips out on its own at some point. However, you shouldn't rely on this.
If you notice that you have forgotten your tampon in your vagina, please talk to your doctor – just to be on the safe side.

2. The symptoms

If a tampon has been forgotten in the vagina, this can be noticed by various symptoms.

Very important: If you notice any of the following things, it does not automatically mean that you have forgotten to use a tampon. There may also be organic, hormonal or mechanical causes.

Basically, a tampon should not stay in the female body for longer than 4 – 8 hours .

If this is the case, the following symptoms may indicate a forgotten tampon (but they do not necessarily):

  • Foul-smelling, usually reddish-brown discharge.
  • Sudden fever, chills, circulatory problems, fainting, nausea and vomiting can indicate the so-called toxic shock syndrome (TSS for short).
  • Very dry mucous membranes in and around your vagina.

3. SOS: What can I do?

As soon as you notice that you have forgotten a tampon, you should remove it immediately .

Ideally, you will be able to grab the retrieval strap and simply pull the item out.

If the cotton thread has come loose, try to feel for the tampon with washed fingers. This is often easier when sitting or squatting . If this does not work, please see your doctor.

And don’t worry: you definitely don’t have to be embarrassed.

4. Just forgot your tampon?

You'll breathe a sigh of relief if you've "just" forgotten your tampon at home.

At least you don't have to worry about how to get the thing out of you now.

However, it can also be extremely uncomfortable if you forget a tampon in the drawer.

The good news : If you forget to bring your tampon, it will usually only happen once (haha) . Because you don't want to experience that hectic feeling again! Luckily, some friend, colleague or fellow student always has a tampon with them.
