1. How does period underwear work?
Period panties are , as the name suggests, primarily panties for your period - i.e. underpants, briefs, hipsters, whatever flows your boat - for when you have your period. Period underwear is designed to be worn during menstruation to be a clean, sustainable and, above all, more comfortable alternative to loose pads, tampons and other period products. Period underwear is usually designed in such a way that there is a kind of absorbent surface integrated in the crotch area that absorbs liquids, so that the issue of pads or panty liners is no longer an issue. This is especially important because loosely stuck-on pads do not stay in place with every movement and slipped pads are not only annoying, but also make us wonder once again whether we are really not leaking.
Period underwear has an absorbent layer that reaches right up to the edges of the panties and completely covers the intimate area. And the blood is simply absorbed? Yes! The absorbent layer in the menstrual underwear, developed by experts, has 4 layers for optimal absorbency and remains breathable. Nothing can slip, run past or leak! 3. How sustainable is period underwear?
In addition to the argument of relief, which is the decisive factor for many, there is also the environmental aspect. A menstruating person uses around 12,000 to 15,000 tampons or pads in their lifetime . That is neither cheap nor sustainable. We know what you are thinking - are you trying to make me feel guilty because I menstruate?! No! No matter what period products you use, you should never feel bad about your choice . Use what you want to use, use the period products that you feel most comfortable with. Whether it is tampons and pads, or a more sustainable alternative.
Period underwear offers a solution to avoid mountains of waste like those caused by sanitary pads and tampons. It is washable, therefore reusable and, in our case, sustainable and vegan thanks to the use of organic cotton or TENCEL Modal and the production according to certified standards. Although there are many standards with different criteria, organic cotton is strictly GMO-free and must be grown without the use of synthetic herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers . This avoids the greatest relative impact of conventional cotton production: the use of chemicals. In addition, organic cotton uses much less fresh water and energy overall (around 90% and 60% less respectively).
Modal, on the other hand, is a natural cellulose fiber that is obtained from rapidly renewable beech wood. It is extremely gentle on the skin and has a high level of flexibility. We use TENCEL™ Modal from Lenzing, which uses closed cycles for chemicals, water and energy in sustainable fiber production. The pulp-to-fiber process is energy self-sufficient and the beech wood forests are managed sustainably and therefore do not require any additional artificial irrigation.
4. How do I wear period underwear?

Even if you spend a lot more on the initial purchase than on conventional tampons, the investment pays off in the long run and is much cheaper in the end . If you buy several or wear them in combination, you wear and wash them less, which means they last longer. As for how long you wear period underwear, it's just like with tampons or pads, depending on how heavy your period is. That's why we have period underwear with different absorbency levels . Depending on the absorbency and amount of fluid, you can wear your period underwear until your panties are full - but you should change them after 10 hours at the latest.
Period panties are therefore – depending on the model – just as suitable for heavy bleeding as they are for menstruators who bleed less.
5. How do I wash period underwear?
After you have worn your period underwear, you can rinse it briefly in cold water and then wash it in the washing machine with similarly colored laundry . The temperature at which you should wash your period underwear depends on its antibacterial protective properties.
The antibacterial layer of period underwear is often treated with biocides to prevent unpleasant odors. With these panties, a wash cycle at 40 degrees is enough to get them sparkling clean.
The insert in our new period panties, however, does not contain any biocides, yay! We have improved the insert so that it can be washed at 60 degrees , meaning we no longer need anti-bacterial treatment. The outer material can also be washed at 60 degrees. The entire insert is made from recycled and biodegradable materials.
We generally recommend using mild detergent for delicate fabrics and special treatment in a laundry net for our panties and advise against using aggressive detergents, dryers, bleach and fabric softeners. If you pay attention to these little things, you can enjoy the benefits of your panties for a long time.
