Diarrhea & periods: reasons and what you can do

Period and you're tied to the toilet because not only the blood runs .. Ever experienced this? The combination of periods and diarrhea is shitty, but it's not a coincidence. Read everything you need to know about it here.

OK, diarrhea isn't exactly our favorite topic (in contrast to periods), but someone has to speak frankly - and we're only too happy to do that, after all, we know no taboos. That's why we're making it clear to everyone who notices a change in bowel movements during their period: Yep, your feeling isn't wrong. Diarrhea and periods are connected. True to the motto: when it's going, it's going.

Summary

Diarrhea & periods are connected.

Progesterone and prostaglandins cause diarrhea.

If the diarrhea during your period is not that bad (but still annoying), you can also try a high-fiber diet .

1. What the hell is this?

You could simply think: "What a load of crap. Why is my digestion messed up right now?" - or you could put bad puns aside for a moment (okay, they're actually quite funny) and realize that the whole thing actually has only natural causes. Because we become regulars at the toilet party thanks to two hormones in particular: progesterone and prostaglandins. What's behind these complicated terms?

2. Progesterone & Prostaglandins

Prostaglandins help the uterus to remove the excess mucous membrane during menstruation. To do this, they send signals to push and expel. And well, because everything down there is so close together, this message often reaches the intestines as well.

Exactly the same thing happens with progesterone . However, this has the opposite effect: it makes everything a little firmer so that a potential embryo can implant itself well. This is why it is produced in the period before menstruation (which can also lead to constipation).

When bleeding starts , the progesterone level drops and the tension in the uterus – and also in the intestinal tract – is released, freeing all the dams.

3. What can be done about it?

The reason why diarrhea during menstruation occurs in many women is completely natural and nothing to be ashamed of.

But let's be honest: the practical consequences still suck (literally!) , so you're probably wondering what you can do about it.

If you spend more time on the toilet than with your best friend or the pain is unbearable, please consult your doctor.

If the diarrhea during your period isn't that bad (but still annoying) , you can also try a high-fiber diet. For example, oatmeal, grated apple and bananas. Sounds like the perfect period porridge.

What also always helps: Make yourself comfortable, put a hot water bottle on your stomach if you have cramps and binge-watch your favourite series (you can even do it on the toilet with your laptop 😉).
