1. The postpartum period

The postpartum period is the phase after birth in which the female body reverses the changes associated with pregnancy and childbirth.

Apart from the physical changes, many women describe this time as particularly valuable for getting to know mother and child and for building a bond and finding their way into their new role.

Even though this first time together is very special, don't feel bad if you feel overwhelmed, tired and exhausted. The length of the postpartum period can vary from woman to woman, every body is different and recovery after pregnancy also takes different amounts of time.

Typically, your body needs between six and eight weeks to recover after your pregnancy.

2. What happens during the postpartum period?

As you know, it's not just your belly that has grown during pregnancy. Your body has gone through a whole process and experienced various changes that are now reversing.
Your body has to expel the excess tissue from your uterus and regulate your hormone levels again. Hormonal chaos and your body working at full speed - even if you have just become a mother, the postpartum period will not always feel easy mentally and physically.
Pay particular attention to yourself now, don't overexert yourself and allow yourself to have your thoughts and feelings. Ideally, you have partners or friends who can give you special support during this time.

3. What is lochia?

Lochia is a side effect of the postpartum period . Lochia is secretion from the uterus that comes out of the vagina, similar to your menstrual period. The difference between lochia and a normal period is that lochia is heavier than your normal period and does not consist only of blood. Lochia is initially red in color.

After about a week, the lochia should slowly become weaker and take on a brownish color.

After about two weeks , the lochia should have turned yellowish and be noticeably less than at the beginning of the postpartum period.

Three weeks after giving birth, the lochia should have changed to a whitish discharge. This also varies from woman to woman, but the lochia should stop between four and six weeks after giving birth.

As I said, every body is different, so be sure to rely on your doctors if you have any questions and get yourself checked out if anything seems strange. There are no stupid questions when it comes to your health!
